The March
SOTM will be at the Tuckaseegee River and the Nantahala River in
North Carolina on the weekend of March 24, 2007. I have
reserved us a group campground at the Kirkland Creek Campground
about 4 miles south of Bryson City. The campground typically
does not open until April 1, but I have talked them into opening
early for us. Based on this I need to get a count of how many
of us there will be. Some of us will be going up on Friday and
leaving on Sunday. I am planning to do a diner on Saturday
night at the campground for everyone, and we may do a breakfast on
Sunday morning depending on how many people we have camping.
All other meals will be left up to each individual.
The Tuck
River DH in about 20 minutes from the campground and can be waded
only when Duke Power is not generating. The link for the
generation schedule is
http://www.nantahalapower.com/lakes/generation/.
The East fork is the schedule you want. However, the
Tuck is perfect for floating even when generating. I recommend
you float it in a drift boat or pontoon, or possibly a canoe if you
have some way to anchor it. I would not recommend a float
tube, so call in some favors and borrow a pontoon if you can.
There is one put in, it is basically a dirt pull off next to the
river (4x4 needed to put in a drift boat, anything else that can be
easily carried will be fine without 4x4), with limited parking so we
will need to team up for the put in. The take out is at a Mr.
Blakenship’s house. He has a boat ramp there and he charges
$10 to park, and he as plenty of parking. The float from the
put in to the take out is about 3.5 miles and is a pretty easy
float.
The Nanny
River DH is also about 20 to 25 minutes from the campground and is a
perfect spot for individuals wanting to wade fish if the Tuck is
generating.
The
following is the link to the campground http://www.kirklandcreekcampground.com/,
here there are directions and contact info for the campground.
The site I have for us is a big wooded group site for tent
camping. The owners have also told me that if some people want
to bring a small RV they will make a few additional sites available
but we need to let them know in advance. If you want to bring
an RV please contact Darlene 828-488-6482 to make those
arrangements.
I
hope we have a great turnout for this trip. There is a lot of
fishing opportunities in this area so if you don’t want to fish the
Tuck or Nanny just do some research on your own and come camp with
us. I do need to get an idea of how many people we are going
to have so please email me at bshinall@epicconsulting.com or call me at
678-313-7593 and let me know if you plan on attending. Also
please call me if you have any questions or concerns. There
will also be more information at the March meeting regarding basic
directions to the campground, the put in and Mr. Blakenships house
along with good fly choices.
